Garbage

Garbage collection

A roadside garbage collection service is provided by a contractor for all properties within Town limits. Garbage is collected once per week from residences and twice weekly from commercial establishments (such as restaurants, retail stores and motels) and institutions. The service begins each day at 7:00 a.m. on scheduled routes, except weekends and holidays. For further details refer to By-law No. 8-01.

Waste disposal site

The municipal waste disposal (landfill) site on Highway 583 North is certified and approved by the Ministry of the Environment. The landfill site is open and supervised throughout the year. The operating hours of the site are:

  • Summer (June 1 to Sept. 30)
    Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    Sunday & Holidays CLOSED
  • Winter (Oct. 1 to May 31)
    Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
    Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    Sunday & Holidays CLOSED

Please do not leave your garbage at the gate when the site is locked. If you are required to bring waste to the site before or after scheduled hours of operation, arrangements can be made with the contractor for special times. A fee is charged for this convenience.

In addition to domestic wastes, the landfill site is approved for the disposal of other waste materials, including construction materials, certain contaminated materials and waste oil. Waste oil must be dumped in the container provided on site. Waste oil disposal is accepted to protect the environment, and is not intended for commercial users. A tipping fee of $50 per truckload is charged for tandem trucks and commercial refuse boxes, which includes the cost for spreading and covering. Contact Department staff for additional information on the disposal of bulk materials and the location on site for dumping.

Recycling Waste

The Town is a member of the Cochrane Timiskaming Waste Management Board and encourages residents to reduce and recycle wastes. Although the Municipality does not provide a blue box roadside pick-up service, paper, cardboard, cans and plastic (types 1 to 7) can be deposited in the Town's depot bins located adjacent to McDonald's Restaurant (1501 Highway 11 West), at Municipal Garage ( 416 George Street) and J.D. Levesque Park (Highway 583 North). For more information on recycling services for printer cartridges, batteries, light bulbs, electronics and others please consult the recycling pamphlet.

The Department provides a collection service annually for spring clean-up as part of the Civic Pride Program.
